Meta Titles and Descriptions: Lengths, Examples and Mistakes

August 18, 2026 · 4 min read

Search results show a clickable title and a short description. You control both with the title tag and the meta description of each page.

Length guidelines

  • Title: about 50 to 60 characters, so it is not cut off.
  • Description: about 120 to 155 characters.

Writing a good title

Put the main topic first, add a brief benefit and keep your brand at the end. Make every title on the site unique.

Writing a good description

Describe what the visitor will get, in plain words, with a small nudge to click. Search engines may rewrite it, but a good one still helps.

Social previews

Open Graph tags control how links look on social networks. Generate them with the Open Graph generator, draft the basics with the meta tag generator and check the result in the SERP preview.
